How to play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Take a moment with Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe before moving to another game. Win three mini-boards in a row on the large board. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Same-device two players.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Win three mini-boards in a row on the large board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Play inside the required mini-board.
  2. Your selected square sends the opponent to the corresponding mini-board.
  3. A closed required board permits play in any open board.
  4. Win local boards, then a large-board line.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A top-right cell sends the next player to the top-right mini-board. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

A single local win does not finish the overall game. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
